Sticky, hard, and crunchy foods can break your braces.
That’s the short answer. When a bracket pops off or a wire bends, your teeth stop moving the way they should. Repairs take time — and every week spent fixing broken hardware is a week your treatment isn’t progressing.
The good news? The list of foods to avoid is short. Once you know it, eating with braces is pretty manageable.
Foods to Avoid Completely
These foods are hard, sticky, or chewy enough to damage braces. Skip them for the full length of your treatment.
Hard and Crunchy Foods
Hard foods are the most common reason brackets break. When you bite down, the force goes straight into the bracket — and brackets aren’t built for that kind of impact.
Avoid:
- Ice (never chew it)
- Hard candy and lollipops
- Popcorn (kernels and hulls are both a problem)
- Whole nuts
- Hard pretzels
- Hard pizza crust
- Bagels
- Corn on the cob
Sticky and Chewy Foods
Sticky foods wrap around wires and get lodged in places your toothbrush can’t reach. That leads to plaque buildup — and sometimes cavities — even when you’re brushing well.
Avoid:
- Gummy candies (gummy bears, worms, rings)
- Caramel and toffee
- Taffy and Starburst
- Chewy granola bars
- Chewing gum — all kinds, including sugarless
- Fruit snacks
Crunchy Snacks
Even “light” crunchy snacks can bend wires over time.
Avoid:
- Potato chips (especially thick, hard ones)
- Hard crackers
- Crunchy taco shells
- Dry cereal eaten by the handful
Foods You Can Modify
Some foods are fine with a little prep work. You don’t have to cut them out — just change how you eat them.
| Food | What to Do Instead |
|---|---|
| Apples | Slice thin instead of biting in |
| Raw carrots | Cut into very small pieces or cook until soft |
| Corn | Cut it off the cob |
| Hard bread or rolls | Tear into small, soft pieces |
| Meat on the bone | Pull the meat off before eating |
Foods That Are Always Safe

There’s still plenty on the menu. These foods are easy on your braces and safe to eat any time:
- Soft fruits: Bananas, grapes, berries, melon, peaches
- Dairy: Yogurt, soft cheese, pudding, milk
- Grains: Pasta, rice, soft bread, oatmeal, soft tortillas
- Proteins: Eggs, fish, boneless chicken, tofu, beans
- Cooked vegetables: Steamed broccoli, mashed potatoes, cooked carrots, sweet potatoes
- Treats: Ice cream (skip the cone), milkshakes, soft cookies, smoothies
Why This Matters More Than You Think
One broken bracket probably won’t change your treatment timeline much. But repeated breaks add up fast.
Every repair appointment is a week or two where your teeth aren’t being moved. If brackets keep breaking — especially on back teeth — you can easily add two to three months to your total treatment time.
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends following dietary guidelines throughout your entire treatment, not just the first few weeks when everything feels new.
If something does break, don’t wait to call us. A broken bracket that sits for a few weeks can let teeth drift out of position. Reach out to our El Cerrito or Pittsburg office right away and we’ll get you in quickly.
The First Week Is the Hardest
When you first get braces, your teeth will feel tender and sore for a few days. That’s normal — your teeth are adjusting to the new pressure.
During that time, soft foods aren’t just smart for protecting your braces. They’re also a lot more comfortable to eat. Smoothies, yogurt, scrambled eggs, soup, and mashed potatoes are your best friends that first week.
Learn more about what to expect when you first get braces and whether braces hurt — two questions we hear constantly at our El Cerrito and Pittsburg offices.
Once the soreness passes, taking care of your braces day-to-day gets much easier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I eat pizza with braces?
Soft pizza is fine. The problem is hard or thick crust. Tear the crust into small pieces, or skip it and stick to the toppings and softer parts of the slice.
Can I eat chips with braces?
Hard chips are one of the most common causes of bent wires. It’s best to avoid them. Puffed snacks — like Pirate’s Booty or cheese puffs — are a softer, safer alternative.
What if I accidentally eat something I wasn’t supposed to?
Check your braces in a mirror. Look for any brackets that feel loose or wires that look bent or out of place. If everything looks normal, you’re probably fine. If something feels off, call us.
Can I eat popcorn with braces?
No — and this is one of the most important ones to follow. Popcorn hulls slip under wires and between brackets where they’re almost impossible to remove. Kernels can crack a bracket. Skip it until your braces come off.
How do I know if I broke a bracket?
You’ll usually feel it. The bracket feels loose or seems to be sliding along the wire. Sometimes a wire will poke out or feel different in your mouth. If anything seems off, contact our office and we’ll take a look.
