If you’re like most parents, you’ve probably wondered when your child should first see an orthodontist. Is it when all their adult teeth are in? When something looks “off”? Or only once your dentist suggests it?
You’re not alone — this is one of the most common questions we hear at Aubrey Barrett Orthodontics. The answer might surprise you:
👉 The American Association of Orthodontists recommends every child see an orthodontist by age 7.
That doesn’t mean your 7-year-old will need braces! In fact, most don’t. But that first visit gives us a chance to check how your child’s teeth and jaws are growing and catch small issues before they turn into big ones later.
Let’s walk through what that means (in plain English!) — and why it matters for your child’s long-term smile and confidence.
Why Age 7 Is the Sweet Spot

By age 7, most kids have a mix of baby and adult teeth. This is the perfect time to see how everything is lining up.
At this stage, Dr. Barrett can spot things your general dentist might not be looking for — like:
- Crossbites or underbites
- Crowding or spacing problems
- Habits like thumb sucking that affect growth
- Early loss of baby teeth
- Jaw growth that’s off balance
Catching these signs early doesn’t always mean treatment right away — but it gives us a roadmap for your child’s future smile. Sometimes, a little early help can prevent the need for a lot later on.
What Happens at the First Orthodontic Visit
If you’ve never been to an orthodontist before, here’s exactly what to expect. (Spoiler: it’s quick, comfortable, and even kind of fun!)
- A warm welcome – Our team loves meeting kids! We’ll show your child around, help them feel comfortable, and explain everything we’re doing in kid-friendly language.
- Photos and a digital scan – No messy impressions here! Our high-tech scanner takes detailed images of your child’s teeth and bite in just a few minutes.
- Doctor evaluation – Dr. Barrett will look at how your child’s teeth and jaws are growing, check their bite, and talk through any concerns she sees.
- Parent chat – You’ll get clear, simple explanations, photos, and answers to all your questions. If treatment is needed, we’ll explain what, when, and why — and if it’s not, we’ll celebrate that too!
Early Treatment: Not Always, But Sometimes Smart
Sometimes early (or “Phase 1”) orthodontic treatment makes a big difference for a growing child.
It’s all about helping the jaws and teeth develop properly — before growth slows down.
Here are a few examples of when early treatment might help:
- Making room for permanent teeth to come in naturally
- Correcting a crossbite or underbite while bones are still flexible
- Stopping thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting habits that affect the bite
- Guiding jaw growth to improve facial balance
These cases often use gentle expanders or limited braces, and they usually last less than a year. Then, your child gets to rest (and grow!) before starting full treatment as a teen — if it’s even needed.
If No Treatment Is Needed Yet — Great!
Many kids we see don’t need braces right away. That’s still a win!
We simply keep them on what we call a growth and guidance plan — free checkups every 6–12 months so we can monitor how their smile is developing.
That way, when (or if) it’s time for treatment, we start at exactly the right moment for the fastest, easiest, and best results.
Why Early Orthodontic Visits Matter for Parents Too

Let’s be honest — orthodontics can feel confusing when you don’t do it every day.
Early visits take away the guesswork. You’ll get:
✅ Peace of mind knowing your child’s smile is developing normally
✅ A clear plan for the future — even if treatment is years away
✅ Time to budget and prepare if braces or aligners are on the horizon
✅ A trusted orthodontic home for your child
At Aubrey Barrett Orthodontics, we don’t rush into treatment. We educate, guide, and partner with parents every step of the way.
When to Book That First Appointment
If your child is 7 or older and hasn’t seen an orthodontist yet — this is the perfect time!
If they’re younger but you’ve noticed crowding, spacing, or bite issues, it’s also a good idea to schedule a quick checkup.
We make these visits easy, educational, and fun for kids — and informative for parents.
You’ll leave knowing exactly what’s going on and what (if anything) comes next.
