Common Orthodontic Emergencies & How to Handle Them
Sore Teeth & Discomfort
It’s normal to feel some soreness after getting braces or following an adjustment. To ease discomfort:
- Take over-the-counter pain relievers like acetaminophen.
- Rinse with warm salt water to soothe sore gums.
- Apply a warm washcloth or heating pad to reduce jaw soreness.
If pain persists or worsens, contact our office for guidance.
Wire Irritation
Sometimes a wire may poke or irritate the inside of your cheeks or lips. Here’s what you can do:
- Try moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser.
- Cover the end of the wire with orthodontic wax or a small piece of cotton.
- If the wire is painful and won’t move, you can carefully trim it with sterilized nail clippers.
If irritation continues, call us to schedule an appointment.
Loose Brackets or Bands
If a bracket or band comes loose:
- Contact our office immediately to schedule a repair.
- If needed, you can gently remove the bracket and slide it off the wire.
- Use sterilized nail clippers to trim any sharp or poking wires.
Even if you have a regular appointment scheduled, please call us to notify us of the issue so we can plan for the repair.
Lost Separators
Losing a separator is common during orthodontic treatment. While it’s usually not an emergency, call our office to determine if it needs to be replaced.
